In our series Fun with Far Post Academy, we showcase fun physical activities for kids in the form of games, drills, and competitions you can easily do with your kids at home!
In today's activity - The Colour Race - our kids are engaged, involved, and active in this game that keeps them on their toes. The best part is, the game is super low effort on the part of the coach (you), requires minimal equipment, and can be set up in a matter of seconds!
The Colour Race
What You Will Need:
A space of 10 ft x 10 ft
4 colours of cones/markers/anything you have around the house
How to Set Up:
Mark the middle of the game area with some tape, chalk, or item. This will be the "Home" base.
In each corner of a square around the middle of the game area, set up Colour bases by grouping items of a similar colour group (in our video, we have Red, Yellow, Blue, and Orange).
How to Play:
The child starts standing in the "Home" base.
You call out one of the 4 colours set in the corners, and the child runs to the corresponding colour.
Call out colours in sequence, picking up the pace as the child gets the hang of the game.
<BONUS STEP> Call out colours other than the 4 colours present, to encourage cognitive recall and processing. The child should not leave their current base if an "incorrect" colour is called, but remain stationary until one of the "correct" colours is called instead.
Turn it into a race by including multiple children, or by timing the game and encouraging the child to beat his/her own time.
What This Game Trains:
Agility & Speed
Colour Recognition & Recall
Processing & Reaction Time
